Algeria

Our Banknote catalog of Algeria.

The dinar (Arabic: دينار‎) (sign: د.ج or DA; code: DZD) is the currency of Algeria and it is subdivided into 100 santeem (سنتيم).

History

The first series of dinar banknotes issued in 1964 consisted of 5, 10, 50 and 100 dinar denominations. In 1970 500 dinar notes were added, followed by 1000 dinar in 1992. The 100 dinar note is being replaced by coins. 200, 500, and 1000 dinar notes are in circulation. The 1998 dated 500 and 1000 dinar notes have an additional vertical holographic strip on obverse.

Frequently asked questions

Which periods of Algerian banknotes are represented in this shop’s catalog?

The Algeria category spans regular issues with first years ranging from 1964 to 1992. Represented series include 1964, 1970, 1977, 1983 and 1992. This gives collectors a catalog-based view across several issue periods, from the 1964 50- and 100-dinar notes through the 1992 100-dinar note. The selection describes this shop’s catalog rather than every banknote issued by Algeria.

Which Algerian dinar denominations and Pick references appear in the category?

Denominations represented in the Algeria catalog include 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 dinars. Listed Pick references run from P124 through P137, with gaps because the category is not a complete list of all Algerian issues. Examples include P124 for 50 dinars, P126 for 5 dinars, P132 for 10 dinars, P133 for 20 dinars, P135 for 200 dinars and P137 for 100 dinars.

How can I identify an Algerian banknote listed in this category?

Use the country, denomination, series year and Pick number together. For example, Algeria P124 is identified as a 50-dinar regular issue from the 1964 series, while P135 is a 200-dinar regular issue from the 1983 series. The year alone is not always sufficient because one series may contain several denominations. Matching every listed field provides a clearer identification than relying only on denomination or visual appearance.

What do suffixes such as “a” and “b” mean in the Algerian listings?

A suffix forms part of the precise Pick reference and should be recorded when cataloging a note. In this Algeria category, the 1964 100-dinar note is listed as P125a, the 1970 10-dinar note as P127b and the 1970 100-dinar note as P128b. These references should not be shortened to the base number when identifying the listed variant. The supplied data does not specify the physical differences between the suffix variants.

What should a buyer check before ordering an Algerian banknote?

Confirm that the listing matches the desired denomination, series and complete Pick reference, including any suffix. Buyers should also note that images for Uncirculated banknotes may serve as product references, so the serial number shown may not match the banknote supplied. The catalog data identifies the notes as regular issues but does not provide print runs, rarity claims or catalog values. Product details should therefore be compared carefully before purchase.

Which Algerian series offers the broadest denomination range in this catalog?

Among the represented groups, the 1983 series has the broadest denomination range: 10 dinars P132, 20 dinars P133 and 200 dinars P135. The 1970 group also covers several denominations—5 dinars P126, 10 dinars P127b and 100 dinars P128b—but spans a narrower numerical range. This comparison applies specifically to this shop’s Algeria catalog and should not be read as a complete account of either series.
