Belize Banknotes
Our Banknote catalog of Belize.
The Belize dollar is the official currency in Belize, formerly known as British Honduras; (currency code BZD) is normally abbreviated with the dollar sign $, or alternatively BZ$ to distinguish it from other dollar-denominated currencies. It is divided into 100 cents. The official value is pegged at 2 BZ$ = 1 US$ since 1978.
The Board of Commissioners of Currency operated from 1894 to 1976. In 1894, the government introduced notes in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 50 and 100 dollars. Production of 50 and 100 dollars ceased after 1928. 20 dollar notes were introduced in 1952. British Honduras was officially renamed Belize in 1973, and the following year a new family of notes was introduced with the new country name. On November 1, 1976, the Monetary Authority of Belize was established, and took over note issuance. The first and only notes issued under its name were dated 1ST JUNE 1980, and included a 100-dollar note for the first time. The Central Bank of Belize was established on January 1, 1982 by the Central Bank of Belize Act No. 15 (Chapter 262 of the Laws of Belize Revised Edition 2000). The first notes issued under its name were dated 1ST JULY 1983. Production of 50 dollar notes recommenced in 1990, the same year that the 1 dollar note was replaced by a coin. On April 30, 2012, the Central Bank of Belize issued a $20 commemorative note dated 01.01.12 (January 1, 2012) to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Central Bank. It is similar to the current issue $20 note, but with the addition of the Jabiru Stork and the commemorative text "30th anniversary Central Bank of Belize". On the back of the commemorative note is the headquarters of the Central Bank of Belize in Belize City.

Frequently asked questions
Which dates and denominations are represented in this Belize banknote category?
This shop’s Belize catalog includes banknotes dated 1984, 1987 and 1990. The represented denominations are 1 dollar, 2 dollars, 50 dollars and 100 dollars. The 1987 and 1990 records include lower denominations, while the 1984 material comprises GOLD-labelled 50- and 100-dollar notes. These dates and denominations describe the shop catalog rather than every banknote issued for Belize.
Which catalog references appear among the Belize banknotes?
The Belize category includes references P46c, P51, P52a and P-CS1. P46c identifies a 1987 1-dollar note, P51 a 1990 1-dollar note, and P52a a 1990 2-dollar note. The P-CS1 reference is used for GOLD-labelled 1984 notes in 50- and 100-dollar denominations. Suffixes such as “a” and “c” should be retained when matching catalog references.
How can I distinguish the Belize 1-dollar banknotes listed in the catalog?
Check both the date and Pick reference. The 1987 Belize 1-dollar banknote is identified as P46c, whereas the 1990 Belize 1-dollar banknote is P51. Because the denomination is the same, relying on “1 Dollar” alone is insufficient. Using the complete combination of country, date, denomination and reference provides the clearest identification within this shop’s catalog.
How are the 1984 Belize P-CS1 GOLD banknotes identified?
The 1984 GOLD-labelled Belize notes share the P-CS1 reference but have different denominations: 50 dollars and 100 dollars. The denomination is therefore essential when identifying or organizing them. The 50-dollar listing explicitly includes the grade designation UNC in its title, while the supplied record for the 100-dollar note does not state a grade. Collectors should preserve the full listing details when recording either note.
What should a buyer check when selecting a Belize banknote from this category?
Compare the date, denomination and complete catalog reference shown in the listing. This is especially important for the two 1-dollar notes, identified as 1987 P46c and 1990 P51, and for the P-CS1 GOLD notes, which appear in both 50- and 100-dollar denominations. Also check whether a grade is explicitly stated; only the 1984 P-CS1 GOLD 50-dollar title supplied here specifies UNC.
What notable grouping is represented among the 1990 Belize banknotes?
The 1990 material forms a useful denomination pairing: a 1-dollar banknote cataloged as P51 and a 2-dollar banknote cataloged as P52a. This grouping can help collectors organize the shop’s Belize offerings by date while still distinguishing each note through denomination and reference. The shared year should not replace the full identification, since the catalog numbers and face values differ.
