Our catalogue of Guyana Banknotes.

The Guyanese dollar (currency sign: $ and G$; ISO: GYD) has been the unit of account in Guyana (formerly British Guiana) since 29 January 1839. Originally it was intended as a transitionary unit to facilitate the changeover from the Dutch guilder system of currency to the British pound sterling system. The Spanish dollar was already prevalent throughout the West Indies in general, and from 1839, the Spanish dollar unit operated in British Guiana in conjunction with British sterling coins at a standard conversion rate of one dollar for every four shillings and twopence. In 1951 the British sterling coinage was replaced with a new decimal coinage which was simultaneously introduced through all the British territories in the Eastern Caribbean. When sterling began to depreciate in the early 1970s, a switch to a US dollar peg became increasingly attractive as an anti-inflationary measure and the Easter Caribbean Currency Authority (of which Guyana was a member) made the switch in October 1975. The Guyanese dollar is normally abbreviated with the dollar sign $, or alternatively G$ to distinguish it from other dollar-denominated currencies.

Frequently asked questions

What periods and denominations are represented in this Guyana banknote category?

This shop’s Guyana catalog includes dated banknotes from 1983 through 2016. The represented denominations are 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1,000 dollars. Examples range from the 1983 P21e 1 dollar and P23c 10 dollars to the 2016 P41 50 dollars. These dates and denominations describe the catalog selection rather than a complete record of every banknote issued by Guyana.

Which Pick reference groups are notable in the Guyana catalog?

Several Pick-number groups contain multiple cataloged variants. The 1-dollar notes include P21e, P21f and P21g, while the 10-dollar denomination includes P23c, P23d and P23f. The 1996 20-dollar notes are represented by P30c, P30e and P30f. Higher denominations include P34b, P36b, P38 and P41. These references help collectors distinguish catalog varieties within this shop’s Guyana category.

How can I distinguish similar Guyana banknote variants?

Use the full Pick reference, including its suffix, together with the date, denomination and recorded signature number. For example, the catalog distinguishes 1983 P23c 10 dollars with signature 6, 1989 P23d with signature 7, and 1992 P23f with signature 9. Likewise, the 1-dollar entries P21e, P21f and P21g have different dates and signature designations. Matching all listed attributes is more precise than identifying a note by denomination alone.

What does an “S” or signature number mean in these listings?

In this Guyana category, listing titles or descriptions use designations such as S6, S7, S14 and S15, with the descriptions identifying these as signature numbers. They provide an additional identification point alongside the Pick reference. For instance, P36b 100 dollars is listed with signature 14, while P34b 500 dollars has signature 12. Not every record supplies a signature designation, so collectors should rely on the complete product description.

Will the Guyana banknote I receive have the same number as the note pictured?

Check the wording of the individual listing carefully. Most records state that their images are for reference and that the banknote number shown in the image will not be sent. One catalog record, the 1992 Guyana P21g 1 dollar with signature 8, instead states that the banknote corresponds with the image. The image policy is therefore product-specific and should not be assumed from another listing.

What variants are represented for the 1996 Guyana 20-dollar banknote?

The catalog records three 1996 Guyana 20-dollar variants: P30c with signature 13, P30e with signature 14 and P30f with signature 15. All three titles describe the notes as UNC. This grouping is useful for collectors organizing the denomination by Pick suffix and signature combination. It reflects the variants documented in this shop’s catalog and should not be treated as a complete list of all possible 20-dollar varieties.
